Condolences

Condolence From: D. Sandy Nielsen
Condolence: Alex Smith Admittedly I didn’t know Cousin Alex as well as my other brothers as he was some twenty-odd years older than me. I do recall that my mother, his father’s sister, Aunt Mary; always looked forward to and enjoyed his visits, with his straightforward mannerisms. Must be the Scot in him. In reflections of his ancestry, I look back at the old photos of his father Alex, his father’s brother, Uncle Jock, and my own father, all dressed up in their Lorne Scots’ army uniforms ready to ship out overseas to keep us free. They did that, managed to return to us, and we are still living free, for which I, and all of us, should be forever grateful. Cousin Alex and I probably had similar memories of shared grandparents in Jessie and Pete who lived on the Ninth Line in Oakville. When I was babysat there, I slept in the kitchen with that massive wood-fed iron stove. I still recall Grandpa dipping his toast in his over-easy soft egg yolk at breakfast and me imitating him. I did the same with a pipe pretending to smoke it like he did. Grandpa Pete left us when I was only eleven. Afterwards, Granny Smith came to live with us at the nursery, and Alex would drop in to pay her visits. We were at Alex’s 50th birthday bash at the, then new, Glen Abbey Golf Course, where my mother pointed out and named all my Scot-side cousins to me. My deepest condolences to all of Alex’s extended family and friends. D. Sandy Nielsen

Condolence: I don't remember the last time I saw Alex, but do remember some fun times on the 9th Line when I stayed overnight with Grampa & Grannie Smith. Mary & I would like to pass on our condolences to Sylvia and family in this difficult time. Cousin Bob

Condolence From: Don Nielsen
Condolence: Cousin Alex and I were very close until our early teens. As often happens we went our different ways seldom seeing or hearing about each other. The last time I saw Alex was at his 50th birthday party. In spite of our not staying in contact with one another, I often reflect on the great times we had together and the fact that we were little hellions always playing tricks on others and constantly getting in trouble . My sincere condolences to all of Alex's family Cousin Don

Condolence: Just a note to Sylvia, Sean and Andrew and families. I have know Alex for many, many years and always found him to be full of life, straight to the point and it always seemed he either liked you or didn't and made it known to you which side of the Alex Smith fence you belonged. I know I was always on "the good side"! Alex was the gentle giant. He was the living meaning of "his bark was worse than his bite" though. I don't think Alex really had a mean bone in his body. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. I always enjoyed our phone conversations, although they were never short, they were always chock full of anecdotes. He always had such interesting stories. Alex, you be be sorely missed my friend. Peace be with you Alex!
